Zanesville Country Club was organized in 1898 to promote the playing of golf and was one of the first in the United States. The County fairgrounds were used for the golf course and consisted of 4 holes.
The Founders of Zanesville's first golf organization in 1898 were: Effington Sturgis, William D. Schultz, Walter Black, Charles Hamilton and Willis Bailey.
In 1899 the Club activities were moved to "Moorehead Meadows" at the north end of Blue Avenue. This was a six-hole golf course.
In 1903 the club was incorporated, a small "clubhouse" was built and each member paid $20.00 to finance the project. In 1918 the clubhouse was built in connections with a re-vamped 9-hole golf course.
From the modest start with a few friends working together, the club grew and incorporated as "The Zanesville Golf Club" on January 18, 1923; the Clubhouse was located on Fairmont Avenue. The membership size at this time was approximately 175 members.
In 1931 another development period was reached. The building of the present 18-hole golf course on Military Road began in September of 1931. The land was leased from Helen Train Tannehill. Charles "Chick" Evans was the golf course architect and Donald Ross also collaborated on the project. The present 18-hole golf course was opened for play July 4, 1933. A new small clubhouse, our present one, was constructed in 1949-1950. The new clubhouse opened to members June 4, 1950.
Our course and facilities are considered among the foremost in the country for a city of our size.
